Brazil, the world's largest tropical country, has become the most important economy in the Southern Hemisphere. With the planet's largest river, two of its largest metropolitan areas, a growing technology and services industry, and an unparalleled wealth of natural resources, Brazil is an increasingly important leader on the global stage. It is the first of the BRICs — Brazil, Russia, India, and China — and host of the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics. Brazil is big, stable, and emerging as a major power. It is the world's fifth largest country, and with its expanding middle class, a strong democracy, and geopolitical stability, Brazil is booming, and the world is watching.

The reason for this book is simple: the world is changing. Emerging markets are currently the strongest engines for world economic growth, and Brazil is a part of this political and economic shift. During recent years, as Jonathan has traveled, he has seen a lot of focus on the rise of China and India. This observation was particularly poignant in 2008 as he traveled through Korea's Incheon airport. He noticed a bookstore with a wide selection of books about the rise of India and China, but he could not find anything on the rise of Brazil — with the world's focus on Asia, Brazil's amazing progress has largely happened outside of the public spotlight. In writing this book, we hope to turn that spotlight onto Brazil. We believe that Brazil is an incredibly dynamic country, and that Brazil's progress ought to be better documented so that it's evolution from underachiever to powerhouse can be understood by all. This book, however, will not be an attempt to produce just another academic piece on Brazil. Instead, it will be more empirical, and it is designed to appeal to people from every field. Rising Brazil is intended to help educated readers get up to speed on the history and future of this fast-growing, South American giant. Our greatest hope in writing this book is that many more readers can become familiar with Brazil and the country's new prominence on the international stage.
